A BRIEF HISTORY

The Department of Anatomical Pathology was founded in 1954, under the leadership of dr. Dervish Dt. Besar who had experience as an assistant in the field of Pathology at NIAS, Surabaya around 1930.

Lectures at that time were only given once a week, because he lived in Tanjung Balai, and continued until 1955 when he finally moved to Medan as Director of RSU Medan.

In 1953 – 1955 Pathology lectures were given in the lecture hall on Seram street and at the Medan General Hospital, in 1955 – 1958 in the student dormitory building at Jalan dr. T. Mansoer and since 1958 until now in the Jalan dr. T. Mansoer. In 1957 – 1959 Dr. H. G. P Kern from the Regional Health Laboratory in Medan was seconded to this section and at that time a practicum started at the Regional Health Laboratory.

Then, dr. Med. H. G. P Kern returned to duty from 1961-1966 as a permanent employee and since 1962 the practicum began again in the Histology room at the USU Faculty of Medicine complex Jl. Dr. T. Mansoer.

Histopathological examination activities in public health services were initially centered at the Regional Health Laboratory under the leadership of Dr. Med. H. G. P. Kern. After he left Indonesia in 1966, this service was not smooth. It was only in 1968 that this community health service was reopened, led by dr. Waldemar Tambunan with the Anatomical Pathology Section Staff and carried out in collaboration with the Pathology Section of the Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University led by Prof. Wijaya Hakim and lasted until 1969.

since 1970 the Head of the Anatomical Pathology has been held by a pathologist who originally served at the Faculty of Medicine, Sriwijaya University, namely Dr. Soegito Husodowijoyo, Sp.PA and then alternately led by a Pathologist from the USU Faculty of Medicine.

The Department of Anatomical Pathology originally located on the Central Campus, 1^st floor at Faculty of Medicine USU. In 1999, moved to Jl. University No. 1, 2^nd floor until the year 2010, the Department of Anatomical Pathology is located in Abdul Hakim Building, 1st floor, at Jl. Universitas No. 1. And now the Anatomical Pathology Laboratory is at the USU Faculty of Medicine, Haji Adam Malik Hospital and General Hospital Dr. Pirngadi Medan whose duty is not only to serve the community but also as a center for medical student education and Anatomical Pathology expertise until now.

Department Vision:

The realization of the best Anatomical Pathologists with global and international perspectives in 2015 through a scientific, professional, ethical-based learning process for health services, especially tropical medicine and malignancy as well as striving for continuous improvement in education, community service and research.

Department Mission:

Organizing education and research of Anatomical Pathology Specialist expertise based on Molecular Biology as well as Histopathology, Cytology and Autopsy technology to serve the community with the managerial capabilities of Pathologists based on professional ethical values of anatomical pathology specialists.

General Purpose:

To become an Anatomical Pathology Specialist who is capable of diagnosing Anatomical Pathology based on histopathology, cytology, autopsy technology.

Special Purpose:

1. To produce graduates of Anatomical Pathology Specialist Doctors who are professional, scientific and ethical and responsible in their fields.
2. Creating Anatomical Pathology Specialist Doctors who are able to develop Anatomical Pathology Science through education, research and continuous community service.
3. Take an active role as an Anatomical Pathology Specialist with managerial capabilities in managing private community service laboratories and hospitals as well as national and international diagnostic centers.
